Vulgar new year

The whole family headed over to LVX Lodge for the New Year's Eve Mass-and-party last night. It was great having [info]laurellady along; with her health issues, it's been a long time since she made it to an OTO event, and she sure picked a good one for her re-entry. [info]krishnahermes did such a great job of DJ-ing that we danced far more than old decrepit folks like us should. :) We even got [info]madelineusher out on the floor a few times.

The Mass was great as well; [info]fraterviao acquitted himself admirably in his first turn as Deacon, and [info]magdalena_lvx and [info]scorpio111 were stellar. I can think of few better ways to put an exclamation point on the end of the year.

Now I can't resist posting my results from the "auto-resolutions" meme.

In 2007, isomeme resolves to...
Give up hiking.
Take prjt2501 reading.
Apply for a new perl.
Tell my family about los angeles.
Find a new java.
Find a better thelema.

Giving up hiking, not so much; I do the urban version as a primary mode of transportation. Taking [info]prjt2501 reading? Sounds good. How about the Bodhi Tree used books section?

The two programming-language-related items are interesting. "Apply for a new Perl" no doubt alludes to my eagerness to learn Ruby this year; Ruby was created by Perl fanatics who combined the core ideals of Perl with lessons learned in the 15 years since it was created to craft (what is alleged to be) a much better language. If the hype is true, I may be shifting to Ruby this year as my primary "utility language" for projects that do not require the firepower of Java.

Which brings us to "Find a new Java". Many commentators are warning that Java has entered its long-decline phase, but nobody seems clear on what is rising to replace it. Given my career path, I need to make a good guess about that and start learning the new tool(s) now. I'm hoping the answer isn't C#, for both technical and ideological reasons. But whatever it is, now's the time to start planning my next jump.

I have to laugh at the suggestion that I "tell my family about Los Angeles". I do, routinely, but they'll never stop thinking I've gone mad. After all, I left God's Own Country (that is, the San Francisco Bay Area) for Hell On Earth (that is, Los Angeles). I doubt any amount of persuasion is going to revise that judgment.

And then we reach "Find a better Thelema". That's worthy of some pondering, isn't it?

As the first person in the Vulgar New Year to post a meme on my friends list you have won a special prize. When it arrives be sure to gather around as many of your fellow meme writers as possible (and none other) before you open it.

Hey, you're the one who chose to click through the clearly labeled cut link to see it; if somebody's going to get blown up for it, I suggest you get in line before me. ;)

True, but I had great faith in you that it was going to be that meme that is going around where one resolves not to post any more memes.

[info]elnigma: I'm just amused by having to keep my gothic clean.

In 2007, elnigma resolves to...
Find a new stigmata.
Go to tolkien every Sunday.
Connect with my inner immersion.
Put fifty wrathful deities a month into my savings account.
Keep my gothic clean.
Overcome my secret fear of opals.

Yeah, gothics are a pain to keep clean, what with all those baroque curlicues and dark twisty passages.

Personally, I'd be more worried about your rapid accumulation of wrathful deities.

Thank you! I was having a complete brain lockup on that.

[info]krishnahermes: jruby

Now that Jruby is being pulled into the core of Java, you'll be able to simply write most of your java in ruby, and its also a cool way to use Ruby on Rails, you can access all of the services and classes of java from within RonR, that could wind up being more powerful than either RonR itself or JSP.

I don't think you need a "new Java," the open sourcing of java is a huge, huge shot in the arm. Plus with Mono you can write .Net applications using Java.

I'm more of a Python guy myself, when I have to code for windows, Python is all I use.

But Ruby has some advantages over python, though its still not as fast as php, so I'm largely stuck using php for practical purposes.

I predict Ruby on java will wind up being the standard way to use it, and within about 3 years, writing java applications with jruby will become very widespread.
